9 Demons We Must Destroy

Prahalad Rajkumar

Hanuman battled many demons.

  • Surasa

  • Simhika

  • Lankini

  • The sons of Prahasta, Akshay Kumar, and Indrajit.

  • Kalanemi

He emerged victorious against them all.

Admittedly, we have external demons to battle today.

  • Group think

  • Corruption

  • A jealous colleague

And more.

However, the our internal demons are our primary problem. Here are 8 internal demons we must we must annihilate on the way to a good house.

Self Doubt

If you hear a voice within you say you cannot paint, then by all means paint and that voice will be silenced.
Vincent Van Gogh

The opportunities to succeed today is unprecedented.

The internet has been a game changer. The world has shrunk and we are no longer bounded by geography.

However, the number of people who wait for permission to innovate is sadly high. “I can’t do X” is an insidious lie people routinely tell themselves.

In the Ramayana, Jambavan had to remind Hanuman about His powers. We may not have a Jambavan to come and remind us about our capabilities — we must motive ourselves into achieving greatness.

Anger

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else.
Buddha

No surprises here — anger is not good for us.

Knowing something and following it are two different ball games. Many of us know the perils of anger and yet routinely let anger get the better of us.

Working on our anger is a favor we do to ourselves as well as the world.

Greed

The world has enough for everyone’s needs, but not everyone’s greed. —
Mahatma Gandhi

We can spend our lives pursuing one desire after another without ever experiencing satisfaction.

Indeed, we would expect millionaires to be satisfied with all their acquisitions, but they keep thirsting for more and more luxuries.

The antidote to greed lies in one word: enough.

When we are happy with what we have and wave the white flag that screams ‘enough’, we open the doors to contentment.

Jealousy

Jealousy is such a waste of time because you’re jealous of them, and they go about their lives and have a wonderful time, so what’s the point?
Joy Behar

Jealousy is one of the pointless emotions we all experience. Jealousy is like watching a movie that sucks an ounce of life out of us.

The time spent being jealous of others is better spent in bettering our lives.

Even if we can’t wish well for others, we can avoid casting an evil eye on them — we can mind our own business and forge our own paths without being jealous at the other people’s good fortunes.

Guilt

Chronic remorse, as all the moralists are agreed, is a most undesirable sentiment. If you have behaved badly, repent, make what amends you can and address yourself to the task of behaving better next time. On no account brood over your wrongdoing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean.
Aldous Huxley

Remorse is good — we want to feel bad for the mistakes we made — so that we wont repeat them.

Chronic remorse eats us up inside. This guilt immobilizes us to the point where we can’t move on with our lives. Feeling sorry for ourselves is a chronic disease.

Every human being makes mistakes. Some make severe mistakes. We must resolve not to make these mistakes a second time, celebrate our mistakes, and then forgive ourselves liberally.

Procrastination

While wasting our time hesitating and procrastinating, life goes on.
Seneca

Tomorrow is a mythical unicorn — it will never come.

Yet, we postpone our important tasks tomorrow. When tomorrow becomes today, we relegate said tasks to yet another tomorrow. Soon enough, 10 years have passed by and we have made zero progress on the novel we wanted to write.

We need to make friends with today. Carpe diem — we must seize the day.

Let us do what we are put on this earth to do and fulfil our purpose.

Scarcity Mindset

People with a scarcity mentality tend to see everything in terms of win-lose. There is only so much and if someone else has it, that means there will be less for me. The more principle-centered we become, the more we develop an abundance mentality, the more we are genuinely happy for the successes, well-being, achievements, recognition, and good fortune of other people. We believe their success adds to…rather than detracts from…our lives.
Stephen Covey

When we think abundance, we operate from a plane of abundance.

Conversely, when we think scarcity, we operate from a plane of poverty.

In both cases, our thought need not match with the reality — we may be thinking scarcity when we have everything.

Let us give our 100% effort and combine it with an abundance mindset.

Selfishness

I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea.
Fyodor Doestevsky

Being selfish hurts us more than it hurts those we refuse to help.

When we are happy when others are happy, our brains cannot distinguish this feeling from when we are happy for ourselves.

The law of attraction says we attract what we think about. When we think badly about other people when we refuse to help them, we attract negativity into our lives.

Wishing people well is a huge favor we can do ourselves. Helping them is the icing on the cake — we will experience the elusive elixir of fulfilment.
